SAMIWENG

Hawaii News Now (HNN) has a morning show called Sunrise. And of their hosts is Miss Annalisa Burgos, a Filipino-American. This week, one of their guests was a choir from Ilocos Norte High School who won daw in the choral competition in South Korea. The group is called Samiweng, it means sweet sound daw. As in sam-it for sweet and aweng for sound. Their conductor is Mr Sherwin Cabreles man cguro to. Then si Mr Lawrence Patricio was also interviewed. They have been there in Hawaii kuno since July 18 and ang ilang final salvo was a concert at Waipahu Intermediate School kuno. Wow, go go go Pinoy! One of the singers looks like Bretman Rock so klaro jud nga Ilokano diay sila hahaha ;)

DW MEDITERRANEAN JOURNEY

Today I watched this series of documentaries from the German news service Deutsche Welle (DW). And I thought of what someone once said. He said Filipinos are very proud and opinionated lagi daw about where they come from. And then I got to think that I may have gotten too close-minded by living here in the Philippines. I chose to live here since I dunno when. But I remember what our trainor, Dr. Leloy Claudio told us during the TCW training. He said expand your horizon and your ethics daw. I admit I had to think hard about it. Coz tinuod, unsa ra man gud ang imong thinking if you live in the Philippines where it is not multiracial or multicultural? Lahi ra jud if you live in the Middle East or in Hawaii or in Europe where you will see people of different races and nationalities jud. And you just cannot just burst out something b. CELESTE JOY

She has become a very good friend jud, ever since I met her in CDU. I distinctly remember her for saan aabot ang CDU uniform mo? coz she wore her CDU uniform on the plane lagi to Davao. I met up with her lagi when I was in Davao last May. She and her husband Clifford took me to dinner at Hilaiza Cafe sa Panabo City. Then we dropped by their house to pick up their 2 beautiful daughters. From there, ila kong gihatod lagis ilang bay ni Mary Yu Ausa sa San Vicente, Panabo, Davao del Sur. Nindut n man gud ta daw ang iyang CDU but nipili p jud siya ug govt lagi maong she has been COS daw for a while now sa Panabo State College. She supported me today in my family crisis kay tuas hospital lagi daw si Teody bana ni Ate Ica. Nainfected daw ang iyang right foot and morag ipaputol kunos doktor kay naitom n. Pastilan buhata Lord. PRIVATE TUTOR

I can work as private tutor too. Nahadlok lagi ko to be a private tutor in Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia maong I gave up the job offer of Mam Amina Al Suwaiket last March. $800 per month gud ang sweldo lagi ato and I have my own accommodation p. And she said I can do things daw while the kids are still in school. I told her n lng that there are things that I want to do here in Philippines and I am really scared to go to their country. Anyway, fast forward to the present. I started y'day with my private tuition student from Xiamen, China. She finished high school n diay daw and just needs to improve her grades so that she can get into schools in the UK or Australia. She seems very eager to learn so I look forward to teaching her more. We have already agreed that I will not go to their house kay laju lagi. I proposed that we meet in Ayala Center Cebu n for our sessions. Nisugot man pud siya. Basta I do my best to teach her well. Theory plus writing jud lagi ang among buhaton aron mahasa pud ang iyang writing ability. We've only just begun, till October p mi ani lagi pohon. Go go go! ;)

DWELL HAWAII

There's a very nice series of videos about neighborhoods in Hawaii by a realtor named Maila Gibson-Badmann. I like watching them coz it gives me a very good idea about property prices and latest developments in Hawaii's real estate market. Not that I'm buying property in Hawaii. I just like being informed about its neighborhoods and all that. It ties up with the defunct KITV series Where You Live. It featured neighborhoods like Kaneohe, Laie, Kahuku, Waiahole, Kapaa and I learn a lot from them. Go go go Doki and happy weekend! ;)

Today I emailed NU Baliwag, Bulacan campus in order to reactivate my application. I withdrew my application with them man lagi last May 27, 2023 coz I found a tutoring job n man here in Cebu. I realized that I miss being in the classroom, being in the academe so I emailed them again to reconsider. I said that if ever I'd get accepted, I want to start next year n pohon so that walay conflict of schedule. Di man gud ko ganahan atong JoinMyTrip oi. Since November 21, 2019, KHON 2 in Hawaii have had this segment to honour and promote Hawaiian history and culture. It is hosted by Kamaka Pili. The pilot episode was Keali'i Reichel in Maui where, aside from the usual interview, he had a knot-tying session with Kamaka Pili himself and he sang his single Kawaipunahele that launched him to fame at the end. It has gone on every Thursday evening in Hawaii I think till now. I have learned a lot from it, I hope they will have it for long p jud. Go go go!

Last night around 8pm, I received email from Dr. Matthew Hoye of the University of Leiden for the Remittances conference this year. It will take place from October 12 to 13 and just like last year, it will be split between The Hague and Leiden (and via Zoom too). I said most likely I will attend again via Zoom this year if I couldn't get the funding. Kamahal btaw pud moadtos Holland oi and laju kaju lagi. But I will have to write my abstract first then see about the funding. Coz remittances regulation ang theme for this year; last year was the values of remittances in times of crisis. Tua n man koy nakita nga readings for Philippine remittances lagi. And I emailed ADB, PIDS, BSP, UN and even IMF for possible conference travel support lagi. Hahay. NYU STERN

I asked Prof. Daniels if they have a PhD program at Hofstra University. Oi, girefer man ko niyas NYU Stern lagi coz maayo daw ilang PhD Econ program. Nag-email n lng pud kos point person didto. Nag-ask kos ilang admission requirements as well as scholarships available. She said all admitted students have funding lagi daw. Wow, $100 ang application fee and $205 daw ang bayad sa GRE but it can be reduced daw if unemployed. And morag December 15 ang deadline for applications lagi. Well, it's never too late for anything man kaha gud. Individualized man daw pud ang ilang program so di kaju kahadlokan cguro. I was almost accepted gud sa UH Manoa for September 2017. Ako lay nibackout lagi. Wala man ko nitake sa GRE so they gave my slot daw to someone else. Lingo2 lagis Cousin Mike upon hearing this. Coz it's so difficult to get admission gud daw to UH Manoa. Right now I am talking to Professor Timothy Daniels from Hofstra University, New York, a professor of sociology, for a paper submission to the AAS in Seattle in March 2024. Malaysian politics ang topic sa iyang panel and if my paper gets approved, I think I can apply for travel grant to cover my travel expenses. Daku n kaju ng tabang lagi pohon. Coz if madayon ko, I plan to drop by Honolulu on my way back so that I can visit Aunty Helen's grave in Kaneohe. Mangita p ko ug kapuy-an lagis Seattle pohon. I'm sure naa ra koy makit-an. I have the time to myself coz sa July 28 p lagi kuno ni Cecilia Lin gusto nga magstart mis among private tuition sessions sa iyang A level Economics pohon. I can go back to the bookwriting thing. Or I will work to get my paper approved for AAS 2024 pohon in Seattle, USA. Basta mabusy ra ko ani lagi. Amen. I've asked for one MBA class n man ni Mam Charlotte sa Dumaguete. Mabuhi ra ko ana lagi. ERASE?

Unsay naa oi nga wala n may videos sa iyang Youtube channel? Gierase niya tanan? Wahh, lisura kaju tawhana. Since June 2011 p gud kuno tong iyang vlog lagi. 2ND COUSIN BONDING MOMENT

We had another bonding moment with our cousins who are visiting from Hawaii last July 12, 2023 coz they came back to spend the day with us. We met them at the port of Tubigon at around 12pm then we went straight to lunch at Monina's Inn in Centro, Tubigon, Bohol. From there we went to the parish office but it was closed. We just had a walking tour of Tubigon that afternoon till Dodong Denden went back to Tubigon to drive us around. We went to H Resort in Calape for dinner in Pangangan, Calape, Bohol. Si Dodong Voltaire just caught up with us there. From dinner, we headed back to Tubigon. They were able to catch the 8pm trip p jud sa Fastcat. Salamat sa Diyos. Sila Ate Wewens, Tatskie and Aineen kay sa ticketan/plaza n lng nihuwat namo. So twas another memorable bonding moment with the cousins in this very short trip of theirs to Cebu/Bohol. We missed the Davao group but maybe next time they could make it. All the best to us always and aloha! ;)

ARGAO

It used to be a very progressive town. I remember Argao Beach Club back in 1990s. Senator Alan Peter Cayetano said Maribago and Argao Beach Club ra lagi kunoy sikat nga beach resorts then. Pirmi pud ni nako malabyan when magtravel2 p lagi ko to Dumaguete before. Anyway, I went to Philippine Science High School for my competency exam, teaching demo and panel interview y'day morning. Thankfully I made it at 830am. Sudlonon kaju ilang school oi. Sa bukid p jud. On the way back, sa bus stop n mi naghuwat. I bought some torta also as pasalubong. The trip took about 3 hours. 1:45 p.m. n man mi nisulod sa Cebu South Bus Terminal. Mga 11am n mi ato nigikan sa Argao. Ang akong ticket diay nga P150 sa van from Cebu to Simala wa n marefund. Gipasa-pasa p jud ko ug counter lagi only to be told nga non-refundable akong ticket. Amaw man n sila oi, moclaim b gud ang tawo ug refund di b if nagamit n nija ang ticket lagi? Hahay, laju2 p jud lagi silas customer service nga word. God bless us all always!

GOD'S SURPRISES

I do believe in them. I consider my admission to CDU in November 2010 as such. I only went to Cebu then in order to meet with Ms Ching from Cambodia who was training at Sports City in MEPZ. But I brought some clothes then for interview just in case. And just as I expected, I was at Chinabank Magallanes in order to get some money when I was called to CDU for an interview. And then I was asked to start right away. Pagkagabii n gud ko nauli sa Palm Heights lagi after mi nagdinner ni Ms Ching. She is actually Ate Jing's colleague at Sportex whose daughter was my student at WIS. So this time I feel that I have another surprise from the Lord. Screening lagi daw ko ig Friday morning pohon. BATAUSA COUSINS REUNION, JULY 9, 2023

Yesterday, 7/9/23 we had the opportunity for a reunion with our Batausa cousins because our cousins from Hawaii, Mike and Paul are visiting. We picked them up from the port of Tubigon at around 930 a.m. Then we went to the house of Ate Wewens Abarquez to drop off their pasalubong. Then off to MacDonald's for a late breakfast then to the cemetery then to Gerarda's restaurant for lunch. Aunty Etel was able to join us for lunch. Surprise all the way from Palawan! She gave 2 packs of cashews to them. The other extra pack I gave to Ate Tonet Abarquez. Then we dropped by Tinangnan for a bit then we went to Chocolate Hills. From there, we went to Magsaysay Drive then back to Ate Wewens' house for snacks then to the church n. It was raining hard when we were at 6pm mass. But still we were able to have dinner at Bazak Food Park then jamming at Ate Wewens' house again before leaving for the port. Our cousin Mike took the 1030pm FastCat trip while the other cousin Paul took the earlier 645pm trip. Twas a very memorable day; that was the first meeting for most cousins after 32 years! I actually saw them in Hawaii last July 2019 so at least not that distant memory for me. Anyway, they might come back daw since July 13 sa hapon p man ilang larga lagis Mactan to Clark. So thank you very much Lord for all the blessings. Amen!

She calls me her seatmate sa CAS Faculty room. Yes, indeed. She was my co-teacher sa CDU SocSci. Gifootball pud siyas USC-BA lagi. Anyway, during the pandemic, wala nas Mam Fe gipateach man gud maong tua n lng xas ilang bay sa Opon. The last time I checked, busy man to siyas Star Maker lagi. She told me to give the guy a chance lagi daw. Kaisa ra daw ta mainlove lagi. So all the best Doki, keep your hopes up! Btw, I changed my picture sa akong CV coz si Mam said dapat recent picture daw. MAINE, USA

Padung n pud diris Pilipinas ang ahong mga bisita nga taga Robbinston, Maine, USA lagi. Pero sa Calape p to sila una kadung. Busy pud ko with my cousins lagi so ayha ra naho sila makita ig human aning among cousins. Sakto ra pud aron makapahuway sila lagi after their very long flight. I checked online, 17 hours diay kuno oi ang New York to Manila nonstop. Sus, mora mag Amsterdam to Jakarta direct. Heheh. God bless us all always!

REUNION

Now that our cousins from Hawaii are in Cebu already, we stand to have a reunion with them tomorrow, July 9, 2023 in Tubigon, Bohol. Unfortunately, walay taga Davao makaari coz dugay sila nipalit ug ticket lagi. Cge n lng, ipa-LBC n lang ang ilang mga pasalubong lagi. Sajon ra n pohon. So we will meet them at the port of Tubigon. We will bring umbrellas coz init kaju lagi oi. And then we plan to have lunch sa Gerarda's pohon. Ganahan daw si Dodong Denden mosuroy nilas Bohol lagi but morag wala silay oras n. JULY 2023 VISITORS

Baw unsay naa lagi nga gadungan man ug ari ang ahong mga bisita this July 2023 pohon. As of this writing, tuas New York n kuno lagi sila EVs and from there motravel n pud sila from New York to Manila and hopefully ugma pohon Manila to Panglao n pud. They would need to rest and spend time in Calape with their relatives there so I don't expect to see him till late next week cguro. And ang akong cousins pud from Hawaii will land in Mactan daw this afternoon. Intawn. But di n man lagi daw sila patagbos airport and lunch get together with the cousins ra may ilang girequest lagi this coming Sunday pohon. So mabusy jud diay ko ani pohon. Go go go Doki! Btw the Chinese student said basin July 20 daw siya lagi moabot diris Cebu. Okay pohon. Wala pay update pud ang Bagosphere but they did say that they're not gonna hire immediately. KING THE LAND

Hilig man ug K drama si Ate Larns who was my host in Phnom Penh. This is a new drama series sa Korea which aired last June 17 p jud lagi kuno. When I checked online, June 17 and 18 ang iyang episodes so it means Saturday and Sunday siya ipagawas sa South Korea. It stars Lee Junho as Gu Woon and Im Yoona as Cheon Sarang. Nice ang istorya. King Hotel etc. Nasa episodes 5 and 6 n ang series. Friends diay sila coz they both came from K Pop. Si Junho used to be part of 2PM while si Yoona was part of Girls' Generation. Hahaha, another love story in the making? Jia you to us all and go go go! ;)

GLADSTONE

He is my Filipino batchmate in Holland from when I studied there in September 2000 to December 2001. He is from Cagayan Province but now teaching PolSci courses at DLSU. He once told me that gwapo, matalino at may pera or mayaman kuno maoy ahong gipangita lagi. Heheh. All the best, Prof Stoney. I last saw him in August 2018, few hours after my visa interview at the US Embassy in Manila. I went to have lunch with them. Sila Dr Cheryl Soriano and Louie Jay Trapa joined us for lunch too. After ako kay my brother told me to go to Manila Ocean Park. Wa n ko kay 9pm n lagi mi niland the night before and morag sajo pud mi namata for my interview at the US embassy the next day. That trip as well as for the Philippine Studies Association (PSA) national conference at the National Museum last September 2018 ang akong last adto sa Manila lagi. Niopen n ang rail or MRT sa Honolulu which they call Skyline. Last June 30, 2023 in Hawaii at 2pm (8 am in Manila of July 1, 2023). Mao tong dihay special coverage lagi ang KHON 2 News with Justin Cruz and Brigitte Namata. Phase 1 p ni siya which is from Kapolei to Aloha Stadium. Morag tua p daw from Aloha Stadium to HNL airport then from Aloha Stadium to Ala Moana Center. Free ride daw from opening day lagi till July 4th. After that kay $3 daw per ride but pwede magamit pud sa bus for unlimited number of times within 2.5 hours. I hope I can go there again so that I can experience their rail for myself. It was in construction stage man when I was there in July 2019. Anyway, all up to God. Happy Sunday to us all! ;)

It is a beautiful country in Indochina. So far Saigon or Ho Chi Minh City ra jud lagi akong naadto. I always find it trendy. Wa p ko kaadtos Cu Chi Tunnel gani. Mabagal man kuno ang Kyrgyztan so okay ra pud ko if didtos VN sa lagi. I have many friends in Hanoi actually (Giang Nguyen and Linh and Phuong) and the guy who sat behind me on the airplane said nice lagi daw ang Ha Noi kay dug-ol ra daw ang mga attractions. More than anything, I wanna go see Hoi An bitaw pud pohon then Da Nang and Nha Trang and Halong Bay. Sila Ate Ica made it to Da Lat. Morag si Aloha pud. Tugnaw kuno didto lagi. Then kadtong naistorya nako nga Malaysian Chinese sa Saigon airport kay naghimo kuno sila ug resort lagis Phu Quoc which is an island off the coast of Vietnam to the west. So tan-awn n lng ni lagi kung asa ko ani madawat. Ganahan bja ko mobisita nila Tita Sonia in Laos Lord pohon. I'll see if madayon p ko pohon. CAMBODIA TRIP, 22 TO 30 JUNE 2023

Salamat po Lord, I got the chance to visit Cambodia again via Saigon. I stayed ila Ate Larns at Apartments 72 in Street 456, Toul Tompoung, Phnom Penh. She kindly picked me up from the Phuong Heng bus stop. Mora pud ug hotel room iyang room oi kay it has a Smart TV and aircon pud lagi bujag. Kuyaw n kaju sila oi kay linked gud sa iyang bank account lagi ang iyang Grab. Pwede n jud sila molakaw lagi nga walay dalang kwarta. Kay they can pay via QR code n man lagi. Basta naa lay sulod ang bank account lagi, pwede ra jud. Nice man gud pud ilang internet didto. Lupig jud ang Pinas lagi tawn. Or ako ray wa nagbuhat ana. Coz si Alan Tabanao kay gilink man pud niya iyang bank account lagis Gcash. I don't want to do that kay lisud kung mahack lagi. Anyway, I met up with Rattanak Sim and his daughter at Chip Mong 271 Megamall last Saturday, June 24th morning. Then si Ate Tess Tangi pud picked me up from the house and we went to Mass at DK Meeting Center near Toul Sleng in the afternoon. We had dinner at Aeon Mall 1 after. Nagkita man mi ni Ate Larns didto so dungan n lng pud mi ug uli. Then the next day kay we were in church for Sunday service at the St Joseph Church just past the Japanese Friendship Bridge. There I saw Bong, Priscilla and their daughter Alyanna, Ate Nahlyn and K-Mart, Marge, Kuya Nasty, Mark and Kim Gonzaga. Then we had lunch at the 46th floor of the Morgan Tower in Koh Pich. Then we had household at Minette Parcon's place near Orussey Market. 33rd floor pud to. In the evening, I met up with teacher John Williams at M Residence in BKK 1. Atbang man jud to siyas former Liquid Bar which is now called The Score. I went to buy the bus ticket at Capitol Tours near Orussey Market. I had snack at 85 degrees Cafe in Monivong Boulevard. Basta that area used to be very familiar to me. Then I went to Toul Tompoung and met up with Bong, Priscilla and Alyanna at Cafe Amazon. Sa KFC ta to, nasaag n man lagi ko. Somewhere south ila Ate Larns n diay ko. I think that was the neighborhood where I used to live. Wa n lng ko katuod lagis kadugay n naho nga wa moadto. Then Wednesday afternoon n ko nigawas pud to buy my souvenirs. Wala n lng mi magdinner ni Ate Larns coz busy man siyas ilang Upper Household Meeting and tutor ni Mr Hap. Then Thursday early morning I left for Saigon n. Sus, the next day p diay ahong flight oi so I slept in Saigon n lng. Thankfully si Giang Nguyen helped me book a hotel in Saigon and she booked me a Grab also going there. So I slept there for one night and watched King the Land the series on Netflix. Then I asked the hotel also to book me a Grab to the airport. So by 12 noon y'day 6/30/23, I was already at the airport waiting for my flight at 22:05 p.m. Thankfully smooth sailing ra tanan and I am here now in Cebu.
